9. Logical conclusions - repeating events

We can make logical conclusions based on evidence about events

(that happen repeatedly).

Droughts occur in Africa. => People must starve there (frequently).

He і must suffer from toothache(sometimes)

I often see him reading; he must learn somewhere.

The road is very bad; accidents must happen here (sometimes).

Her English is very good; she must speak it often. Don't use an infinitive or an -ing form instead of verb word after MUST.

 

10. Knowledge and ability - KNOW and KNOW HOW

 To express knowledge:

He knows the answer.

The і knew і these rules yesterday.

To express ability:

He knowsіhow to answer.

The knew how to use these rules.

11. Past custom, habit: 'used to';

(past or present custom): 'BE used to -ing' or 'BE used to (noun)'

 FOR PAST CUSTOM, HABIT, don't continued now:

S used to verb word

I USED TO smoke 20 cigarettes a day, but now I don't.

He DIDN'T USE TO be rich, but now he's got a Rolls.

Where DID you USE TO live when you were a child?

FOR CUSTOM, HABIT (at any time, now or in the past)

 S BE used to -ing form / noun

I am used to getting up early.

He was used to reading thick books.

They aren't used to these roads.

Don't use a form of BE after 'used to'. Don't use a verb word instead of an -ing form (for present).

 

 

12. Advisability: 'had better'

 

S had better verb word

I had better walk.

You had better take this course next semester.

He had better read the book.

S had better not verb word

I had better not do his.

You had better not smoke here.

Don't use an infinitive instead of verb word. Don't use don't instead of not.

13. Preference: 'would rather'

 

S would rather verb word

She would rather drive than walk.

He would rather type this letter, because his handwriting isn't legible.

 

S would rather not verb word

I would rather not eat this fish. 

Don't use an infinitive instead of verb word. Don't use don't instead of not.

 

14. Preference for another person or thing: 'would rather that'

 S would rather that S V (past)

I would rather that you drove.

He would rather that she did anything.

Don't use an infinitive, a verb word or a present verb instead of a past verb. Don't use 'should' instead of 'would'

S would rather that S didn'tі V (past)

I would rather that you didn't drive.

He would rather that she didn'tі do anything.

Don't use "don't" or "doesn't" instead of "didn't."

 

15. Negative imperatives

Please don't + verb word

Please don't smoke here

Please don't tell anyone

*Don't use: infinitive

 

Would you please not + verb word

Would you please not smoke here

Would you please not tell anyone

Don't use: infinitive Don't use: "don't" instead of "not"
