These adjectives have irregular forms.

104. Degrees of comparison - comparative adverbs.

Two- and three-syllable adverbs form the comparative by using "more" or "less" before the adverb, and the superlative form by using "most" before the adverb.

One-syllable adverbs form the comparative and the superlative by adding "-er" and "-est".

 Don't use "-er" and "-est" with two-syllable adverbs, even if they end in "-ly".

 fast faster the fastest

quickly more quickly the most quickly

 comparative + than

We finished the test more rapidly than Mark.

We finished the test faster than Mark.

 superlative

We finished the test the most rapidly of all.

We finished the test fastest of all.

 

105. Double comparatives: the + comp .... the + comp

The first comparative expresses cause,

the second comparative expresses result.

CAUSE і RESULT

the + comp + S + V , іhe + comp + S + V

The more you read , іthe better you understand the language

The higher is the pressure,іthe less is the volume

  Don't used the INCORRECT form *"lesser". Don't use "as" instead of "the"; Don't omit "the" or "-er".

 

106. Illogical comparatives - general sinilarity and difference.

Comparisons must be made with logically COMPARABLE nouns. Don't compare "the climate in the north" with "the south", but "the climate in the north" with "the climate in the south". One can use "that of" and "those of" instead of repeating nouns.

 noun(sing) ... is different from that ...

Football in the US is different from that in other countries.

 noun(plural) ... are different from those ...

The rules are different from those of soccer.

  Don't omit "that of" or "those of"; Don't use "than" instead of "from";

 

107. Illogical comparatives - degrees.

Comparisons must be made with logically COMPARABLE nouns.

noun(sing) ... is + comparative + than that ...

The climate in the north is more severe than that of the south.

The climate in the north is colder than that of the south.

noun(plural) ... are + comparative + than that ...

The prices are higher than that at a discount store.

  Don't omit "that of" or "those of"; Don't use "than" instead of "from";
