Style is a general term that includes elements larger than a single grammatical patterns or structure. Style problems are concerned with sentence structure; that is, how the parts of a sentence relates to each other.

POINT OF VIEW means maintaining the correct sequence of verb tenses and time phrases in a sentence.

201. Point of view - verb.

In all patterns maintain a point of view, either present or past.

Don't change from present to past tense, or from past tense, to present in the same sentence.

 EXAMPLE:

Incorrect: He was among the few who want to continue working on the project.

Correct: He is among the few who want to continue working on the project. (present)

or, He was among the few who wanted to continue working on the project. (past)

202. Point of view - reported speech.

Some verbs are used to report past events.

S V(past) that S V(past)

He said that he was sorry.

He knew that they had no water.

Following verbs are used in the first past verb in the pattern above:

asked knew said

believed remembered thought

forgot reported told

Don't use a present verb after "that" in this pattern.

203. Point of view - verbs and adverbs.

Don't use past adverbs with verbs in present tense.

Past adverbs are those that say that the event took place in the past; eg.: yesterday, last year, in 1776, two days ago.

Between one thing and another, Charles didn't і [not "doesn't"]! finish typing his paper last night.

204. Point of view - activities of the dead

Never use present verbs to refer to activities of the dead.

Incorrect: Just before his death, my friend who writes poetry published his first book.

Correct: Just before his death, my friend who wrote poetry published his first book.

AGREEMENT.

Subjects must agree in person and number with verbs;

Pronouns must agree in person and number with nouns they refer to and with other pronouns.

205. Agreement - modified subject and verb.

In all patterns, subject must agree in person and number with verb.
